How is SkinPen Administered?
We begin by cleansing the skin and applying a topical numbing cream for comfort. Once the skin is numb, the SkinPen device is gently passed over the treatment area in multiple directions. The device uses sterile, disposable needle cartridges to create thousands of microchannels in the skin.
The entire procedure takes about 30–45 minutes, depending on the size and number of areas being treated. After the treatment, we apply a calming serum to support healing.
How long does SkinPen last?
SkinPen results develop gradually. You may notice visible improvement after just one treatment, but a series of 3 sessions spaced about 4 weeks apart is typically recommended for best results.
Once your skin reaches a new baseline, maintenance treatments every 4–6 months help preserve results and support healthy collagen turnover as you age.

How to Prepare for your SkinPen Treatment
- Avoid sun exposure or tanning beds for at least 48 hours before your appointment
- Discontinue use of retinoids, exfoliants, or acids (glycolic, salicylic) for 5–7 days pre-treatment
- Avoid aspirin, ibuprofen, high-dose vitamin E, and fish oil supplements for about a week to reduce risk of bruising
- Let your provider know if you’ve had recent cold sores — we may recommend prophylactic antivirals
What can I Anticipate After Treatment?
Expect mild redness, warmth, and a tight or sandpaper-like feeling for the first 24–48 hours. Some pinpoint bleeding or flaking is normal. Downtime is minimal — most people return to normal activities the next day, though we recommend avoiding heavy exercise and heat exposure for at least 24 hours.
Your skin may feel dry or slightly rough for a few days before gradually returning to normal with improved texture.
Does SkinPen Hurt?
The topical numbing cream makes most treatments very tolerable. Patients often describe the feeling as light pressure or a vibrating tickle. More sensitive areas may feel mildly prickly but shouldn’t be painful. After treatment, the skin may feel sunburned or warm, but this resolves quickly — usually within a day.
